Fedora 17 is built on Linux kernel 3.3 and utilizes EXT4 as its default file system, so it is incredibly stable and reliable, not to mention fast.

The major improvement to Fedora in this release is GNOME 3.4.1. It’s much better than the version of GNOME used in Fedora 16. Unlike earlier versions, GNOME 3.4.x will now run without the need for a 3D driver.
GNOME 3.4 also includes a new and improved search function in its activities overview which makes it easier to find programs. Search functions in general are much faster than they were than in its interface’s earlier incarnations.

Linux is already well-known for being strong on security, but Fedora is perhaps one of the most secure Linux distributions out there thanks to the inclusion of Security-Enhanced Linux (SELinux), which implements security policies including mandatory access controls.

Includes new and improved features to support cloud computing, including HekaFS–a “cloud ready” version of GlusterFS–along with OpenStack and pacemaker-cloud.

Expanded virtual network support and an updated version of Spice – which is designed for managing virtual machines – are both included in Fedora 17, as are Xen support, a new virtual machine lock manager, and better ability to browse guest file systems.
